24 Jul Updating the Kitchen in Your East End/Hamptons, Long Island Home
The kitchen is often the real center of the home. It’s where people gather for parties, holidays, family meals or just grab a snack. A few small changes can have a big impact when we’re talking about your kitchen, without undertaking a full kitchen remodel.
There are a number of ways to make your cabinets look a little fresher and more updated. You can refinish them, which refers to keeping all components – doors, drawers, and frames – the same but changing the colors of the cabinets by painting them or staining the wood. You can also opt to reface them, which involves changing only the door and drawer fronts. (The frames, which are the boxes that actually contain your cabinets and drawers, stay the same.) Another way you can change things up cabinet-wise is to take the doors off – the open shelf can make your kitchen feel more open. The simplest way to freshen up your cabinets is to change the knobs (and hardware, if you have exterior cabinet hardware).
Adding or getting a new backsplash is a great way to give your kitchen a less intensive update. There are many options when it comes to color and materials, though glass and metal are two of the most popular choices.
Back painted glass is pretty much what it sounds like – the glass is painted on the back.
Printed glass is a similar concept to back painted glass, but with an image or design printed on it. Today’s digital printing techniques mean there are a lot of choices as to what you can have on a printed glass backsplash. Clear glass gives you the option to leave it blank, or put something like fabric, paper, or posters behind it. Most of these are also available in Plexiglas too.
Stainless steel is scratch-resistant, which makes it a good choice. It can give your kitchen a more modern feel and can work well in a key area (behind the stove, above the sink) in conjunction with another type of backsplash in the rest of the kitchen area.
Painting is the first thing that comes to mind when people talk about adding or changing a room’s color. The good news is that you don’t need to paint the walls to add some pops of color to the kitchen. Some options for adding color are adding accessories in bright colors – like your kitchen towels, placemats and/or tablecloth. Paint your chairs a cheery yellow or get new ones entirely. If you have an island, you can paint it, which is a lot less of a commitment than painting the walls.
If you don’t have an island, consider adding one if you have the space. They come in a variety of sizes. We can help you choose and install the right one for your kitchen.
Getting a new light fixture can instantly brighten up your kitchen, as can adding new lights. Installing lighting under the cabinets can make things brighter and allow you to have task lighting if you do a lot of meal prep or baking.
As mentioned above, this can refer to the kitchen cabinets, but it also covers things like faucets and sinks. Replacing the faucets is a fairly easy way to update the look of your kitchen.
