29 Jul Adding Some Pop to the Powder Room in Your Hamptons/East End, Long Island Home
Let’s begin with the term ‘powder room.’ It’s usually used to refer to the ladies room in a commercial or retail setting. In a residence, it usually refers to a bathroom that lacks a shower or tub, or to the guest bathroom. This makes your powder room a great opportunity to show off a little, or try something not found in your typical bathroom.
Bold is Beautiful
This is the place you can choose a really bold paint color, patterned wallpaper, or textured tiles that might not be as relaxing as what is in your spa-like master bath. This is the place to use those shiny coin-like mosaics tiles for flooring or the wallpaper that mimics jungle greenery. Choose some wallpaper that’s a map of the world. Black and white checkered floors could work well here.
Less Function, More Fun
The powder room is the right place for that fun, but sort of less functional, towel rack. Or, if the ceiling is high enough, maybe install a fancy chandelier to make a statement and add some sparkle to a normally staid space. Always wanted a mirror that’s an unusual shape, like one with wavy edges or an unconventional border? This is the place to put it. You can even install mirrors on the ceiling or one entire wall.
Playing Around With Proportions
Since it’s a half bath meant for occasional use, it doesn’t require the amount of storage your full bath does. In light of that, a pedestal sink (which doesn’t have storage underneath) might work well here. If you have a countertop, this is a great place to install a vessel sink – that’s the kind of sink that sits on top of the counter (as opposed to one that’s recessed into the countertop). There are many options just for pedestal sinks and vessel sinks, and we can help you figure out which one works better for you.
Another fun option is to forgo the traditional sink base for something more unique. A lot of things can be converted into sink bases, like that neat wooden cabinet you found at an estate sale or a bureau or even a filing cabinet.
The ceiling is an often-overlooked space. As mentioned above, you can have it mirrored. Another fun option is to have it painted or decorated, albeit unconventionally. It can be a design that’s relatively simple – fluffy, white clouds or the moon and stars (maybe your astrological sign?). Or it can be something more complex – your ceiling can also be painted with a design that recreates part of the Sistine Chapel’s ceiling, or even tiled like Istanbul’s famous Blue Mosque.
