02 Aug Adding a Den to Your Hamptons/East End, Long Island Home
A den is a great space to have – it’s a gathering place for family, a place to relax, and can double as a playroom if you have kids or grandkids. When clients ask us to add a den to their home, the first thing we do is take a look at what space is being underutilized and has the potential to be transformed. The most commonly underutilized rooms are the dining room, extra bedroom, and basement.
Dining Room To Den
Many people have formal dining rooms that get used once or twice a year, if at all. You can even keep any storage pieces and swap out the china for board games and books. If this is next to your kitchen, you can even cut out a pass-through between the two rooms and put some stools there, which makes snack time a lot easier. Put down carpeting (if there isn’t any already) to make the room feel warmer and to make it a lot more comfortable to sit on the floor (especially if you have kids or grandkids).
Bedroom To Den
If you only use your guest room a few times a year it might be worth making it a den. It can still function as a guest room by having a pullout couch, or a Murphy bed wall unit.
Basement To Den
This can be a little more complex, as it’s key to make sure the basement is waterproofed and well insulated. We cover those steps in more detail here.
What can you do in your new den?
Once you choose the space you want to convert to a den, there are many options in terms of what you put in there, either separately or combined. Here are a few popular choices:
Home Theater/Media Center
We can help you turn this space into the perfect environment for viewing movies/TV and playing video games. FD Building Co. does all the soundproofing, wiring, and construction, and we work with in-home theater specialists who install the media components (projector, screen, speakers, amp, TV, etc.) and theater furniture.
We can create and install storage options to house your craft supplies and layout the room with enough space for a craft desk or table.
We can install toy storage that fits your needs (and those of your kids), whether you choose shelves, closets, or even a bench with built-in storage.
A den can be a great place to curl up with a good book. If you want to use this space, or part of it, as your personal library, we can guide you towards the best shelving options.
If your den has the space, it can double as a music room. We’ll help you when it comes to planning for storage of your musical instruments.
The possibilities are numerous and we understand that this can be a lot of information to take in. At FD Building Co. we’re here to help you figure out what works for you and your family. Contact us at (631) 779-2859 or send us a message to discuss this in more detail.
